Medical Education - December 2025

MD'26

Fourth-year students are busy with residency interviews, the majority of which continue to be virtual but some  specialties have returned to hybrid and others  fully in-person interview options. Students continue to work hard to fulfill their remaining requirements for graduation and are eagerly awaiting our annual  Match Day celebration on March 20, 2026. As in prior years, several fourth-year students are engaging in our various international exchange programs offered through the Center for Global Health Equity and will be travelling to a broad range of locations in the new year including Brazil, China, Dominican Republic, Ghana, Kyoto, and Tokyo.

Third-year students are nearing the completion of  their core Clerkship rotations with more than half the class having already selected their intended specialty of interest. Students are currently being paired with Brown faculty from the various clinical departments, who will serve as their specialty advisors for the upcoming year-long residency application process. Over the past several months, students have also participated in various career advising class meetings as they prepare to embark on their final year in medical school and the highly anticipated transition to residency. In addition to planning their upcoming Year 4 clinical rotations, students will also prepare for and complete Part 2 of the USMLE licensing exam.

On November 12, 2025, second-year students participated in the 19th Academic Symposium, featuring projects in basic and translational science,, medical education, health policy, medical humanities, and clinical research completed during the summer between Year 1 and 2.  Students will conclude the Pre-Clerkship phase of the curriculum on December 19, 2025 with the completion of the Human Reproduction block. Following a well-deserved winter break, students will then launch into their Step 1 dedicated study period which averages 6 weeks for the majority of students. During the  dedicated period, students are paired with an advising team that includes their Mary B. Arnold mentors as well as an advisor from the Office of Medical Education or the Office of Student Affairs who will support them throughout the entirety of their study period. Following the Step 1 study period, students will begin the Clinical Skills Clerkship (CSC) on February 17, 2026, a two-week intensive preparatory course  taught primarily by graduating fourth year students who work alongside Doctoring faculty to best prepare students for their clinical years. At the conclusion of the CSC, students will commemorate the conclusion of their classroom learning and celebrate the transition to their clinical training at the fourth annual Stepping Up Ceremony which will be held on Saturday, February 21, 2026

First-year students are rapidly approaching the end of their first semester of medical school, which will conclude with the Microbiology/Infectious Diseases block. As they look forward to a  well-deserved winter break, students will also begin preparing plans for their summer between Year 1 and Year 2, with the vast majority engaging in summer research assistantships, many of which are made possible through the incredible generosity of our donors. At the start of the Spring semester in January, many first-year students will also take on new leadership roles in Interest Groups and Pre-Clerkship electives, as their second-years colleagues transition to their clinical rotations.
