Medical Education - April 2025

MD’25

Fourth-year students celebrated a spectacular Match Day on March 21, 2025 with a record number of guests in attendance at the Warren Alpert Medical School. The event featured congratulatory remarks by Dean Jain, a massive balloon drop, and a celebratory toast from Dean Hampton. At this point in the academic year, the vast majority of fourth-year students have already fulfilled the requirements for their MD and have been cleared for graduation by the Office of Records and Registration. While preparing for their next chapter in residency, many students are spending time travelling and reconnecting with their loved ones with a plan to return to Providence for the opportunity to engage in the many traditions that are unique to Brown’s Commencement weekend. While others continue to work to bring final research projects across the finish line and engage in teaching and mentorship opportunities with junior medical students. It’s hard to believe that the countdown to Commencement is almost here!

MD’26

Third-year students finished their final clinical rotations and shelf exams of the academic year on April 18, 2025 and then celebrated with a well-deserved week of vacation as they prepared to launch into their final year of medical school.  A significant proportion of the class will spend one of the next few months preparing for the Step 2 CK exam which is Part II of the USMLE licensing examinations, and a requirement for both graduation and future residency training. The class has also been busy working with their career specialty advisors, Mary B. Arnold mentors,  and the Office of Student Affairs to prepare a fourth year schedule that facilitates deep clinical exploration into their anticipated specialties while optimizing the most competitive residency application possible.

MD’27

The dedicated study period for the USMLE Step 1 licensing examination concluded on April 11, 2025 and second year students then launched into the two-week Clinical Skills Clerkship on April 14, 2025.  The course is taught primarily by graduating fourth year students who work alongside Doctoring faculty to best prepare students for their clinical years. The Class commemorated the conclusion of their preclinical education and their official transition to their clinical training on Sunday, April 27, 2025 with the annual Stepping Up Celebration which featured the Harriet W. Sheridan Lectureship given by Dr. Jay Baruch who spoke on “Creativity is our sharpest medical instrument.” The new academic year officially started on April 28, 2025.  This class will experience a shortened Clerkship year as the Office of Medical Education embarks on the final phases of implementing the curriculum redesign which will ultimately result in a longer fourth year for MD27, with increased ability for career exploration, specialty decision making, and clinical preparation for residency.

MD’28

First-year students are finishing up the academic year with the Endocrine Sciences and Hematology blocks which will conclude Phase I of the curriculum redesign. The majority of the class will then engage in funded research with Brown faculty  through the Summer Research Assistantship Program while others will explore clinical training and scholarly work in their potential field of interest both locally and nationally. This Class will engage in Phase II of the curriculum redesign during Year 2, with an early entry into their clinical training in March of 2026.
