Fourth-year students are working hard to fulfill their remaining requirements for graduation while also completing residency interviews. While the majority of residency interviews during the 24-25 application cycle have remained virtual, several specialties have returned to in-person interviews. Students participating in the military match have already received their Match assignments and will be celebrated alongside their peers during the annual Match Day celebration on March 21, 2025. Beyond curricular requirements, some students are also engaging in international rotations via longstanding Exchange Programs and also preparing to begin the Internship Preparatory Course (IPC), their final preparation for the transition to residency, which offers both in-person and asynchronous elements.

Third-year students are more than half way through their Clerkship rotations and beginning in the month of December, will engage in a series of class meetings hosted by the Office of Student Affairs, to prepare for the transition to their final year of medical school. In January of 2025, students will receive their specialty advisor assignments based on their anticipated career interests, and will work alongside the Office of Career Development and their Mary B. Arnold mentors to develop a fourth year schedule that ensures a broad range of clinical experiences in their specialty of interest and optimizes a robust residency application. Pending successful completion of their remaining clinical rotations, students will also begin making plans to study for and take Step 2 CK, the second part in the USMLE licensing examination series..

On November 13, 2024, students participated in the 18th Annual Academic Symposium where their research from Scholarly Concentrations projects and Summer Research Assistantships was featured. Several members of the class were awarded first prize for research in the areas of basic and translational science, medical education, health policy, medical humanities, and clinical research. Second-year students are now nearing the conclusion of the Fall semester and are preparing for the Human Reproduction exam on December 13, 2024. Upon their return to medical school from a well-deserved winter break in January, 2025, they will work to complete the final two organ system blocks of Year 2 before transitioning to the highly anticipated Step 1 dedicated study period at the end of February. During the dedicated period, students are paired with an advising team that includes their Mary B. Arnold mentors as well as an advisor from the Office of Medical Education or the Office of Student Affairs who will support them throughout the entirety of their study period.

First-year students are approaching the end of the Fall semester as they work through the Microbiology and Infectious Diseases course, and will complete the 7th and final exam of the Integrated Medical Sciences block on December 19, 2024. In November, students engaged in an informational session on the application process for the Scholarly Concentration Program and Summer Research Assistantships where they received information on several programs including but not limited to Basic Science and Translational Research, Emerging Infectious Disease and HIV Scholars Program, and the Global Health Initiative. Students will submit their research applications in February of 2025 to secure funding, some of which is supported by the generosity of our donors, to pursue their scholarly plans during the summer between Year 1 and 2.
