MD’25
Fourth-year students have been working closely with their Career Specialty Advisors, Mary B. Arnold mentors, and the Office of Career Development at the Medical School since the start of the academic year on the year-long process for transitioning to residency training. Students have been very busy preparing their residency applications for a submission deadline of September 25, 2024 for the vast majority of specialties. Students applying in early Match programs such as Ophthalmology and Urology submitted their applications at the beginning of September while those applying in Plastic Surgery and Anesthesiology have an application due date of September 16, 2024. Following application preparation and submission, students will engage in interview preparation which includes both AI generated as well as live mock faculty interviews. Beyond the standard Year 4 curriculum offerings, the Brown Global Health Initiative recently announced the application opening for a host of international medical exchange programs that are only available for fourth-year medical students. Applications close on September 26, 2024 for rotations that are typically 3-4 weeks long from January to March of 2024. Applicants will be notified about their international site match on October 7, 2024 and are required to make a decision by October 19, 2024. All Year 4 students are expected to participate in the annual Suicide in Healthcare & Science: From Awareness to Action conference hosted on September 25, 2025 at the Medical School with a featured presentation titled, “Beyond Awareness: Implementing Suicide Prevention Strategies for Medical Residents.”
MD’26
Third-year students have already completed a third of their clinical rotations as they look forward to a well-deserved vacation week and the conclusion of the Fall semester the week of October 21, 2024. Many students have already engaged in clinical elective opportunities in specialties of particular interest in addition to the required Core Clerkships. All students will be excused from clinical responsibilities to attend the opening plenary of the annual Suicide in Healthcare & Science: From Awareness to Action conference hosted on September 25, 2025 at the Medical School. The featured session will cover “Reducing Depression and Suicide Risk in Training Physicians: Insights from the Intern Health Study” by Dr. Srijan Sen.
MD’27
Second-year students were welcomed back to campus the second week of August and launched right into the Cardiovascular block on August 7, 2024. The Cardiovascular block concluded on August 30, 2024 and students are now more than half-way through the Pulmonary block and are actively preparing for the exam on September 27, 2024. Students are fully engaged in the Doctoring Clinical Skills program and will complete their first Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) of Year 2 on October 9, 2024. Students will engage in an overview and discussion on September 19, 2024 around preparing for the USMLE Step 1 licensing exam which they are expected to take at the end of Year 2. Beyond the structured curriculum, many students are continuing to engage in research activities and participating in and leading Student Interest Groups as well as Pre-Clerkship Electives. All Year 2 students are expected to participate in the annual Suicide in Healthcare & Science: From Awareness to Action conference hosted on September 25, 2025 at the Medical School with a featured Keynote presentation titled, “Reducing Depression and Suicide Risk in Training Physicians.”
MD’28
First-year students had a successful launch to Year 1 of medical school with Orientation the first week of August. They are already well into the curriculum having completed the second exam of the Integrated Medical Sciences block on Friday September 13, 2024 along with their first Anatomy Lab Practical. Students are also fully engaged in the Doctoring Clinical Skills program and will complete their first Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) on October 9, 2024. The first program in the year-long Careers in Medicine series was hosted on September 10, 2024, and featured Urology. On September 3, 2024, students participated in the 261st Opening Convocation ceremony with a record number of medical students lining up to process through Van Wickle Gates. Students, faculty, and administrators are looking forward to the Ceremony of Commitment to Medicine for the MD Class of 2028 on Saturday, September 21, at 2:00 pm at the Olney-Margolies Athletic Center on main campus. All Year 1 students are expected to participate in the annual Suicide in Healthcare & Science: From Awareness to Action conference hosted on September 25, 2025 at the Medical School with a featured presentation titled, “Let’s Start the Conversation: Discussing Medical Student Anxiety, Depression, and Suicidality.
