The majority of fourth-year students have fulfilled their requirements for graduation and are actively being cleared by the Office of Records and Registration. Over the past few months, students have been busy completely licensing and credentialing requirements for their training hospitals, securing housing in new cities, while finding time to travel and reconnect with loved ones. Commencement weekend is less than three weeks away and the class eagerly awaits the opportunity to engage in the wonderful traditions and spectacular celebration typical of Brown’s Commencement weekend. The weekend will officially kick off with a host of events at the medical school including the Scholarly Concentration Graduation, the Primary Care-Population Medicine Graduation, and the Student Awards Ceremony, which will all take place on Friday May 24, 2024. Of note, the class of 2024 entered medical school during an unprecedented time in our country, starting their medical education with the first ever virtual Orientation to The Warren Alpert Medical School. They now prepare to exit Van Wickle Gates in person as they look forward to what we are confident will be bright and successful futures ahead.

Rising fourth year students have been working hard over the past several months with their specialty advisors, Mary B. Arnold mentors, and the Office of Career Development to finalize their Year 4 schedules as they prepare for the year-long residency application process in their respective fields. While the majority of fourth year clinical experiences will take place here at Brown, many students, particularly those applying in highly competitive specialties, will engage in away or “audition” rotations at other institutions over the next several months. In addition to engaging in subinternships and clinical electives, many students are also preparing for Step 2CK, the second examination in the USMLE licensing series. Our Office of Student Affairs eagerly awaits further guidance from many national organizations and disciplines regarding residency application and interview season updates for the 24-25 application cycle and will share this information real-time with the class.

Third-year students concluded their Step 1 dedicated study period on April 12, 2024 and began the two-week long Clinical Skills Clerkship Course on April 15, 2024. The class celebrated with their classmates and families at the annual Stepping Up Ceremony on Sunday April 28, 2024 as they commemorated the conclusion of their preclinical education and the official transition to the clinical years. Students are just two weeks into the new academic year, experiencing many firsts as they put the skills they worked hard to cultivate during Year 1 and Year 2 through the Doctoring Program into action.

This is a very busy time for first-year students who are working diligently to finish up their Year 1 requirements. They are preparing for Exam #2 of the Micro/ID block on Wednesday May 15, 2024 followed by the final exam of the Supporting Structures block on May 23, 2024. Students are also looking forward to the Ceremony of Gratitude which will be held on Friday, May 17 from 6:00-7:30 pm. The Ceremony of Gratitude is a yearly tradition of The Warren Alpert Medical School that is held to honor the anatomy lab donors and their families as students also officially conclude their journey in anatomy over the past year. Importantly, the ceremony provides space for both students to reflect on the donors’ generous gift to the anatomy program and for families of the donors to share stories about their loved ones.
