Third-year students are about a third of the way through their core Clinical rotations which include dedicated rotations in: Obstetrics and Gynecology, Clinical Neurosciences (Psychiatry and Neurology), Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Surgery. In addition to the core Clerkships, each student will have a four week elective block during which time they are able to explore additional specialty or research interests. Members of the class continue to engage in other activities, such as leadership roles, community service, research, teaching, and student interest group activities but the vast majority of their time is spent in the clinical setting.

First-year students completed their Orientation and officially started classes on August 7, 2023 with the Health Systems Science course. They have also started the Doctoring program, which is the clinical skills component of the curriculum and completed the first exam of the Integrated Medical Sciences course on August 25. On August 16, members of the class were invited to complete an optional and fully anonymous mental health and wellness assessment and each student was offered an opt-out one-on-one wellness check with our Chief Wellness Officer, Dr. Kelly Holder. In the upcoming months, students will also be introduced to our longitudinal Careers in Medicine Program which allows exploration of a full range of specialty/career options. Lastly, in addition to the structured curriculum, students are also exploring a host of pre-clinical electives and extracurricular offerings as they become fully settled in their new roles as medical students.

August was full of excitement as students spent their last days of summer and prepared to return back to campus. Students were finishing up summer courses, internships, jobs, and wrapping up other summer experiences in preparation for the new school year. The first-year students were busy moving into their residence halls and getting to know the rest of their class.
As students settle back in to campus life, first-year PLME students are looking forward to their orientation day on September 1st, where they will get to meet their advising groups and assigned dean and make plans for course registration day and shopping period.
