The lack of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) data collection presents difficulties to providing high quality cancer care for LGBTQ patients. I am working with Dr. Don Dizon at the Lifespan Cancer Institute (LCI) to conduct qualitative and quantitative interviews that will examine beliefs, attitudes, and processes for implementation of SOGI data collection at LCI. The goal of our project would be to understand barriers to implementation and explore processes for how to best implement this data collection.

This summer I have been working in the Center for Spine Tumor and Chordoma Research under Dr. Sullivan and Dr. Martinez Moreno. My research is primarily translational, going into the operating room with Dr. Sullivan and bringing tumor samples back to the lab for analysis with Dr. Martinez Moreno. Through our research we hope to identify molecular mutations in these tumors for the development of novel therapies.

For my summer, I'm doing a writing project with Dr. Mark Brady focusing on varying liability frameworks for certain categories of physicians during declared states of emergency, inspired by recent experiences with the pandemic. I also just finished teaching a Summer@Brown course for high school students interested in learning more about medicine. We had a combination of lecture, anatomy lab, and even a day in the clinical suites with standard patients. It was great to connect with the next generation and I was impressed by the amount they already knew coming in!
